Inspirational Story of Social Work

8-Year-Old Abuse Survivor's Heart-Wrenching, Inspirational 'Thank You' Letter to Social Workers

Eight-year-old Marie Surprenant was abused as an infant. She can't walk as a result of the injuries she sustained. And yet, she is grateful.
In an open letter to "social workers and detectives," the little girl writes that she was taken to the hospital as a baby where, "he lied and said I fell out of the bed. So that's when you got involved and solved my case and not letting the bad guys hurting me or anyone else."
Now, because of their help, she writes she is "happy" and in a "warm and safe environment."
Her mother, Michele Surprenant, who is herself a social worker, adopted Marie from foster care as soon as she was released from the hospital.
"I was explaining to Marie that often social workers get a bad rap, many people are afraid of social workers, think they are the people who take babies away," Surprenant said. "But most are good people trying to change the world."
Marie's letter was originally featured on Children's Healthcare of Atlanta's blog.  It has become one of their top-read posts of all time.

The content of the thank-you letter, Surprenant said, was all Marie. Which makes sense because a portion of the note, after the thank-yous have been expressed, is about her dog, who drives her "crazy" because of the snoring that is "as loud as a vacuum and sounds like an old man." It also talks about her two cats and her class pet, a bearded lizard.
"She has a very sweet personality and is very matter-of-fact," said Surprenant. She's also very grateful, her mother said.
"She was hurt when she was so small and she's never walked," Surprenant added.
The hardest part, her mom said, is that her paralysis causes scoliosis, so she needs rods in her back and surgery every six months.
"Two surgeries ago, she asked if she had to have them because of the man who hurt her," she said. "That was hard."
Though Marie used to speak regularly about the "man who hurt" her, today she rarely mentions him, Surprenant said.
The lesson, Surprenant added, is that "you can move on. Anybody can have a tragedy, but you work through it and life can be beautiful. She is a happy kid. People assume because she has a physical disability she will be unhappy or maybe she has a hard time making friends. Nothing could be further from the truth."
But despite her gratitude, Marie's planning on leaving the social work to her mom. She wants to be an orthopedic surgeon.
"Every time she sees her orthopedic surgeon, she's asking him career planning questions," Surprenant said. "But I told her sometimes he has to be at work at 6 a.m. some days, and she thinks that's a little too early. She's wondering if she'll be able to work the night shift."

CHOOSE SOCIAL WORK!!!

Why Social Work?

"Social work is the art of listening and the Science of Hope" -anonymous
If I were to be asked, if what profession must be focused in our world today, I would probably choose 'Social Work'  why social work? as from the statements and information that were given on the other forums, it is clearly stated that Social work is not just helping itself, it's not just  feeding people,  donating material things such as clothes, voluntary works, giving time or lending a hand.
Social Work is more than that! It is a profession where in you solely put your heart, willingly and whole heartedly extending an arm for the people who mostly needs it. In social work, you don't exert an effort just because it is needed or affiliated to your job, you move and help because you chose to. You do things because you have your heart on it.

And that is what our World's needs. We need someone who can help without any hesitations and doubt. Someone with competence, courage, empathy, respect, and flexible. Yes, Social Work is not an easy job, for it requires a lot of patience and responsibility, but for someone who has the courage to do work with all of their heart, we can consider Social work as an easy job! and that someone, could be you! yes, you who is reading this right now. There's a goodness in you, you have a heart that can be used to extend care for others.

Would you just let our world drift apart because of poverty? war?  or injustices?  The one I know won't let it happen because he knows what's right. He won't let his people  die in thirst, hunger or in war. because the one I know has a heart and empathy for his fellowmen. You must be that someone.

Social work is the practice of love and care, so I'm encouraging you all to try this practice. For the love is the key for peace, and our world needs peace.

It's never too late to be a Social Worker!

Think for it while you still have a chance. "It's better late,
than never" -LILA MAE CRUZ

"As a social worker their job is very important. They do everything and sacrifice to help us. Without them we cannot fix our problems, we cannot find solutions on how to solve our problems. In our daily life especially in our generation, they are the main path in which they provide assistance and help of those in need like children to have a brighter future and families to have food, homes, and personal health care.
This is a serious job, not an easy work and not a joke to help their families and our fellow Filipinos. If you were a social worker or not if you do your job well and all of your sacrifices will be all paid off.

If you would be a social worker you'll do a lot of things such as you give solutions and advices. If you choose to be a social worker you must have humility, patience and respect to your clients. Being a social worker must always be active and ready in all of his/her duties.

All of us needs a help. We should help each other for the sake of our lives and to have a good economy. "It's better to give without asking in return."

WHY SOCIAL WORK?

Social work is a unique profession rich with meaning, action, and the power to make a difference. Social workers pull communities together, help individuals and families find solutions, advance changes in social policy, promote social justice, and foster human and global well-being.

If you’re looking for a career with meaning, job satisfaction and an abundance of options, consider social work. Social workers are individuals who care about people, who want to make things better, who want to relieve suffering and who want to do some good in the world.

The rewards of being a social worker are not monetary or material. People who want to make the world a better place are generally driven by a desire to help people.
Why should I select social work?
(According to Gabriela Acosta)

If you enjoy helping others and making a difference in their lives, social work can offer you significant personal rewards. Social workers take pride in knowing they are helping others cope with life’s difficult problems and find solutions. The profession offers multiple opportunities for long-term advancement and strong growth potential. In fact, social work is one of the fastest growing careers in the nation, with a predicted growth External link of 25 percent between 2010 and 2020 — an average higher than all other professions.

What are the different types of jobs I can do in the social work profession?

The social work profession is committed to helping people function the best they can in their environment. This can mean providing services or therapy directly to people or working for change to improve social conditions. As a social worker, you can serve individuals, families and communities in three main fields: child, family and school; medical and public health; and mental health and substance abuse. You can be a manager, supervisor or administrator and serve at all levels of government. You can become an educator, therapist or researcher or be elected as a political leader or legislator. You can work in public agencies, private businesses, hospitals, clinics, schools, nursing homes, private practices, police departments, courts and countless other workplaces.

How do I become a social worker?

Most people who obtain entry-level social work positions have a bachelor’s degree in social work (BSW). Those who wish to advance in their careers or provide therapy must earn a Master of Social Work (MSW) degree and pass their state’s licensing requirements External link . Degree programs involve classroom study as well as practical field experience. The bachelor’s degree prepares graduates for generalist entry-level work, whereas the master’s degree is for more advanced clinical practice.

Who are suitable for a career in social work?

The most successful and fulfilled social workers are those who want to help people and make a significant difference in the lives of those in need. If you are nonjudgmental, empathetic, understanding, patient and insightful, you would likely prosper as a social worker. A background in volunteering and advocacy can also be a plus.
Social work is a fast-growing field, especially in the areas of older adults and veterans. Although demanding and stressful at times, social work also can be highly rewarding, particularly if you enjoy problem solving in a busy environment. Many social workers report feeling fulfilled from the everyday activities of their job and the people whose lives they touch. If you’re looking for a career that will enable you to work with some of the most vulnerable people in your community and truly make a contribution to improving their lives, look no further.

  •                      x SOCIAL WORKERS x

X Social Work is not just about having a big heart, and is always willing to help. Social Workers are highly-trained professionals who hold a degree in social work at the bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral level.
X helping for the public doesn't always mean it is a form of Social Work, some may be a politician, volunteer, psychologist and more
X Social work is not a 24/7 job. Yes, it is required to spend a lot of time for this job for you are not just helping, but solely putting your heart on the job. And it doesn't mean having no time for your personal life, Social work knows it's limitations and has a line between the job
    and the personal life.

    What Do Social Workers Do?

Social workers provide services as members of a multidisciplinary team or on a one-to-one basis with the client. The duties performed by social workers vary depending on the settings in which they work.

Social workers employed by child welfare agencies (public and private) investigate cases of family violence, child abuse and neglect and take protective action as required. They may recruit foster parents or supervise the placement of children in protective care. Others work on adoption cases.
Many school boards hire social workers to help students adjust to the school environment. They help students, parents and teachers to deal with problems such as aggressive behavior, truancy and family problems, which affect the students’ performance.

In general and psychiatric hospitals, social workers are members of the treatment team. They provide a link between the team and the family as well as with community resources. In these settings they contribute to the care, treatment and rehabilitation of the aged and of physically or mentally ill individuals, as well as the care of disabled persons.

In health and community services centers, social workers are involved in the provision of counselling to individuals or families and in providing services to seniors. Some work as community developers helping citizens to identify their needs and proposing ways of meeting these needs. Others may assist with parent-child relationships and marriage counselling. The services may be offered on an individual basis or in groups.

In the correctional field, social workers may be part of a team concerned with the social rehabilitation of young or adult offenders. They may work as classification officers. Others work as probation officers or as parole officers. Parole officers help ex-prisoners adjust to life in the community while conforming to the conditions of their parole.

Social workers in private practice offer their services on a fee-for-service basis to individuals, families and organizations. Their services include counselling, psychotherapy, mediation, sex therapy, policy and program development, organizational development, and employee assistance programs.

Social workers involved in policy analysis, policy development and planning are usually working in federal and provincial departments or social planning councils. Researchers are found in universities and governments. Others are teaching in universities and community colleges.

    Rights, Responsibilities, and Accountabilities

Social work foremost rights include the right to fulfill its professional mandates and to live by its values

     * Social work responsibilities cover those that pertain to the dispensation of its basic functions, roles, professional standards and adherence to its local and international codes of ethics.

    * Social work is accountable to the clients, the general public, and the society.

    What is Social Work?

Social work   is an academic discipline and profession that concerns itself with individuals, families, groups and communities in an effort to enhance social functioning and overall well-being. It also applies social sciences, such as sociology, psychology,  political science, public health community development, law, and economics, to engage with client systems, conduct assessments, and develop interventions to solve social and personal problems; and create social change.

Social work practice is often divided into micro-work, which involves working directly with individuals or small groups; and macro-work, which involves working communities, and within social policy, to create change on a larger scale.

"Social work is a profession concerned with helping individuals, families, groups and communities to enhance their individual and collective well-being. It aims to help people develop their skills and their ability to use their own resources and those of the community to resolve problems. Social work is concerned with individual and personal problems but also with broader social issues such as poverty, unemployment and domestic violence." -Canadian Association of Social Workers

Social work  practice is also strengths-based. Social workers help people or groups identify their problems, determine their skills and capacities, what they are doing well, and how that was accomplished, and then analyze ways that those strengths might be applied to the identified problems.

The practice and profession of social work has a relatively modern and scientific origin, and is generally considered to have developed out of three strands. The first was individual casework, a strategy pioneered by the Charity Organization Society in the mid-19th century, which was founded by Helen Bosanquet and Octavia Hill in London, England.

Professional social work originated in 19th century England, and had its roots in the social and economic upheaval wrought by the Industrial Revolution, in particular the societal struggle to deal with the resultant mass urban-based poverty and its related problems. Because poverty was the main focus of early social work, it was intricately linked with the idea of charity work.

Other important historical figures that shaped the growth of the social work profession are Jane Addams, who founded the Hull House in Chicago and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931; Mary Ellen Richmond, who wrote Social Diagnosis, one of the first social work books to incorporate law, medicine, psychiatry, psychology, and history; and William Beveridge, who created the social welfare state, framing the debate on social work within the context of social welfare prevision.
